Even though Florida is a "no fault" state, drivers are still required to maintain $10,000 Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and $10,000 Property Damage Liability (PDL) insurance coverage on every vehicle that is registered to them in Florida, regardless of whether they drive it regularly. Other endorsements like uninsured motorist are not required (But are a really good idea!).

Drivers do not have to notify the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) when they switch insurance companies.

All licensed insurance companies report electronically to DHSMV if a driver cancels their PIP coverage, changes, or starts a new policy. If your car insurance company notifies DHSMV that you canceled your policy AND no other active policy has been reported by another auto insurance carrier, you will receive a letter from DHSMV telling you that they need the information on your new insurance policy. You can avoid getting DHSMV insurance verification letters after you sell your vehicle by turning in your Florida tags and registration immediately right after you cancel the car insurance.

If your insurance company cancels your policy (usually for non payment) they will electronically report this to DHSMV. The DHSMV letter will include a deadline or suspension date. If you provide proof of insurance before your suspension date, you will not have to pay reinstatement fees. If you fail to provide proof of insurance before this suspension date, your driver license, tag, and registration will be suspended. Reinstatement fees are as follows:

• 1st Offense: $150 reinstatement fee
• 2nd Offense within 3 years: $250 reinstatement fee
• All subsequent offenses: $500 reinstatement fee
